Lisa Jose

I  have been a passionate artist and maker since childhood, always drawing, painting or making in my spare time.

The first opportunity to use my skills professionally came when I studied archaeology at the University of Melbourne and worked as an illustrator on digs in Syria and Türkiye.

The painstaking nature of drawing artefacts provided excellent grounding for the intricate process of creating my linocut prints.

After completing my PhD in archaeology at the Australian National University, I combined freelance illustration with silversmithing. I still make jewellery for my label, Stuart the Cat Designs.

I fell in love with linocut printmaking after finding it a wonderful way to pass the days during Covid lockdowns, and had my first solo exhibition, "Dog", at Belconnen Arts Centre in 2024.

My pet portraits invite viewers to share in my love for animals, and to feel a jolt of connection when they meet their gaze.

My interest in the millennia-long role of domestic animals in human life was sparked during my archaeological studies, and I remain curious about the place of all animals in the human sphere.

I live with my husband and our cat, Stuart in Canberra.
